My Experimental Work

The Monsters are Revolting
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9DpgQM06iE)

Response to 'Vostok' by 'Pocket Magnetic' (Café Concrete) - montage of photographs - pixilation and film using a collection of UV responsive toys and a fly eye lens - In this work, particular importance was paid to the timing of someone else’s sound piece to my video - I really like this work. To me, it shows that I have matured and developed my ideas and editing processes.

Here again the work is in response to 'I will not go on’ by  'Tear Down the Lies'  ( Café Concrete ) - I really tried to broaden the experimental feel by filming the reflections and using a mobile phone to record. - I wanted to express an apocalyptic and dystopian view point of the Civic Centre, which kind of reflects how I feel about it.

Overall, despite my early reservations, the experimental assignments gave me opportunity to progress and mature my approach to my work.

My Personal Statement

Film making is something I enjoy as it allows me to learn new creative skills that I never knew rather than had. It allows me to put my own viewpoints, ideas and creative style across to people in a very public way. I have really thrived in the post production aspect of the industry, especially editing. I enjoy this as I feel it is a process that really gels all the work together, and enables me to participate fully despite my issues with mobility.

Throughout my whole life, I have enjoyed watching films (old and new) and try to get to the cinema as often as possible for new releases and through this I have developed a keen interest in the production of film. I always keep up to date with upcoming films, via IMDB and review sites and in particular, I am interested in the work of directors such as Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas and Ridley Scott and films like Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Aliens, Blade Runner and Star Wars. I also enjoy documentaries, for example Walking with Dinosaurs, Planet Earth, Horizon and Panorama.

I first became interested in film making after taking part in the BBC's Breeze Project, a scheme set up by the BBC to seek out new talent within the southwest by giving young people the chance to discover new skills in film and music. I thoroughly enjoyed this scheme and through it I began to develop a keen interest and skill in media production. This encouraged and inspired me to take up film making as a future career and influenced my final decision to gain a more in depth understanding of film production.

I am currently studying in higher education in Film Arts area, where I can expand my interest in documentary and feature film production, as well as maybe CGI special effects. I also like exploring different methods of film production that lead away from the mainstream areas. Having spent much time over the last two years concentrating on editing and production, I am keen to master other areas of the industry, such as directing, filming, sound production, script writing and acting.

In media production, I have gained skills in editing, filming direction, production of websites, advertisements, title sequences, sound design. I have also continued to learn about animation covering the disciplines of Claymation, pixilation, rotoscoping and drawn animation.

Some of the production work required me to work within a team. This gave me a position of responsibility, such as editing in order to complete the production, which I learnt a great deal from.

I have good film editing skills, and the ability to show good direction to my productions. Being able to see a job through to the end and managing all the relevant processes involved in the production of a piece of work is an attribute that I have, which I believe will be vital in the film industry. I consider myself to be very I.T. literate, and have never been afraid to explore my way through software to find the right methods to achieve the work.

In the future, I see myself as an up and coming film maker and director. I have been inspired hugely by my particular interest in the production of documentaries, where I believe my knowledge of history, geography and the local area would be more than useful. I am self motivated in the pursing of my intended goals.

My Final Major Project Film

Plymouth: A Changing City
http://vimeo.com/15954897

As shown at the Further Education Summer Show at Plymouth College of Art on the 15th - 19th June 2009

My idea for my film was to produce a 15 minute (approx) experimental film that will be part of a potential series of films, each focusing on an area of Plymouth’s redevelopment.

In this particular film I chose to focus on the West End - Independent Quarter.

I am interested in Plymouth city history and the changes that are occurring.

This area is long overdue a facelift. Its buildings that came up in the fifties are tired and characterless. There is no warmth and many of the buildings and street, particularly in Colin Campbell Court are run down.

The West End is currently on the verge of redevelopment, as part of the 2020 Plan for the area.

Having completed recently a successful project on experimental video, I am very much inclined to cross genre the whole documentary thing
with experimental approaches:

Experimental + Documentary
=
Experimentary

This film takes inspiration from hard hitting documentaries; work by Michael Moore, such as Sicko, Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11. Particularly the way he touches upon dire issues and pushes the interviewies to say what he wants them to say.

Approach to my film

Originally - to deliver a threefold story of a particular area of Plymouth:

· Pre 1939 - Not used anymore in my film

· Post War - as it is now - just before changes start

· Plan of the West End’s future

Also, interviewing traders and council - What they know and feel.

On approaching my film experimentally

In considering that this is experimental, I decided to place two opposing interviews side by side with both there audios playing together, but with each channelled through different speakers (Left channel for person on the left and right channel for person on right).

This allows both interviews to be clearly heard together, while also giving a very experimental and disorientating feel to the interviews.

Controversy:

Patrick Knight (The Business Improvement District Project Manager for the West End) -was extremely concerned he might have said things on camera that he might later regret...

...and that was exactly what he did do (kind of) - He got uptight and unanswering when it came to the BIG controversial questions, particularly about granite used being imported from China and the carbon footprint that would cause.

So, in true Michael Moore style, I decided to use this for satirical, yet purposeful use at the end to show how unprofessional and evasive him and probably the council are being towards information that is meant to be public information.

After all it was originally supposed to be a 'feel-good' film, which could have helped promote their redevelopment
